Great Wi-Fi Names is a free library of clever, funny, and clean Wi-Fi network names you can use for your home or office router. We built it because picking a good Wi-Fi name is a small, low-stakes pleasure, and most lists online are stuffed with duplicates, broken characters, or names too long to actually save on a router. Our team curates names that work the first time.
Why this site exists
We wanted one place where every name on the page is ready to copy and use, with no surprises. Too many name lists ignore the technical limits of routers, so you find a name you love, type it in, and it gets cut off or rejected. We sort that out before a name ever reaches the page.
How we curate and categorize the names
We hand-pick every name, group it by mood and occasion, and check each one against the rules a router actually enforces. Categories like funny, clever, nerdy, neighborly, and family-friendly help you find a fit fast instead of scrolling a single giant list.
When we review a name, our team looks at three things:
- Length. A Wi-Fi network name (SSID) can be up to 32 characters. This limit is defined by the IEEE 802.11 wireless standard, which allows an SSID of up to 32 octets (bytes). We count every candidate so nothing on the page exceeds it.
- Character safety. Plain letters, numbers, and spaces each count as one character. Emoji and some special symbols count as multiple bytes, so a short-looking name with emoji can quietly blow past the 32-byte limit or fail to save on certain routers. We flag or avoid names that depend on characters many routers reject.
- Tone. We keep the main collections clean and workplace-safe, and we label anything edgier so you are never caught off guard.
About the 32-character limit
The 32-byte ceiling is a hard technical limit, not a style choice, so we treat it as a firm rule. For names using only standard letters, numbers, and spaces, the character count and the byte count are the same, which keeps things simple. If you adapt one of our names with accented letters or emoji, remember those can use more than one byte each, and check the result against your router.
How this site makes money
This site is free. We earn through display ads and, when you buy a router through our Amazon links, a small commission at no extra cost to you. We do not charge for the names, gate them behind a signup, or sell your information.
Honest limitations
We test names against the published SSID standard, but routers and phones do not all behave the same way. Some older or budget devices reject characters that the standard technically allows, and a few cap usable names below 32 characters in practice.
- If a name looks fine here but will not save, it is almost always a quirk of your specific router. Try a shorter version or drop any special characters.
- We are a small team and cannot guarantee a name is unused on your street or unique to you. Wi-Fi names are not private, so do not use anything you would not want a neighbor to read.
- Names with emoji may display differently across phones, laptops, and smart-home devices, and some gear will not show them at all. When in doubt, see the guide for a plain-text alternative.
We update the collections over time, remove names that turn out to cause trouble, and add new categories as ideas come in. If a name ever steers you wrong, we would rather hear about it and fix it.
