What is an SSID?
An SSID (Service Set Identifier) is the name of a Wi-Fi network. When you open the list of available networks on your phone or laptop, every name you see is an SSID. It is how your devices tell one nearby Wi-Fi network apart from another and know which one to join.
The term comes from the IEEE 802.11 wireless standard, the set of technical rules that governs how Wi-Fi works. Under that standard, the SSID is the human-readable label your router broadcasts so that nearby devices can find it. Knowing what an SSID is matters because it is the first thing you (and anyone near you) see about your network.
What does SSID mean, and how is it different from your password?
SSID means Service Set Identifier, which is simply the public name of a Wi-Fi network. It is not the same as your Wi-Fi password. The SSID identifies the network so devices can connect to it, while the password (also called the network key or passphrase) is the secret that actually grants access.
Think of it this way. The SSID is like the name on a shop's front door, visible to everyone walking past. The password is the key that lets you inside. Changing the SSID changes only the displayed name. It does not change who can get on the network, and it does not require anyone to re-enter the password unless the name itself changes.
Every device you have connected before remembers the SSID it joined. If you rename your network, your saved devices will see a new name and most will ask you to connect again.
What is a Wi-Fi SSID's character limit?
A Wi-Fi SSID can be up to 32 characters long. This limit is set by the IEEE 802.11 standard, which defines the SSID as zero to 32 octets (bytes). For ordinary text, one plain letter, number, or space counts as a single character, so 32 is the practical ceiling for a normal name.
The "octets" detail matters once you go beyond plain text. Standard letters and numbers use one byte each, but characters like emoji or some accented letters use more than one byte. An emoji can take up several bytes on its own, so a name full of emoji will hit the 32-byte limit well before it reaches 32 visible symbols.
A few more practical notes on the name:
- Spaces and most symbols are allowed. You can use spaces, punctuation, and mixed upper and lower case.
- SSIDs are case sensitive. "HomeWiFi" and "homewifi" are treated as two different network names.
- A blank name is technically valid but it makes the network awkward to identify, so we do not recommend it.
Should you hide your SSID?
Hiding your SSID stops the router from broadcasting the name, so the network does not appear in the public list. This offers very little real security, because the name is still visible to anyone using basic network tools, and your own devices broadcast it as they search for it. A strong password and modern encryption (WPA2 or WPA3) protect your network far more than a hidden name does.
How to find and change your SSID on any router
You change your SSID from your router's admin page, not from your phone's Wi-Fi settings. The exact menus differ by brand, but the path is the same on almost every home router: log in to the admin page, open the wireless settings, edit the network name, and save. Here is the generic process that works for most routers.
- Open the admin page. In a web browser on a device already connected to the network, type the router's address into the URL bar. It is commonly something like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. The address is often printed on a sticker on the router itself.
- Log in. Enter the admin username and password. These are also frequently on the router sticker, and they are not the same as your Wi-Fi password.
- Find the wireless settings. Look for a section labeled Wireless, Wi-Fi, or Network. The field you want is usually called Network Name or SSID.
- Edit and save. Type your new name (remembering the 32-character limit), then save or apply the change. The router may restart its Wi-Fi for a moment.
If your router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, you may see two SSID fields. You can give them the same name so devices pick the best band automatically, or different names if you want to choose manually. After saving, reconnect your devices to the new name, and you are done.
Once you know how to change it, naming your network is the fun part. A clear, friendly SSID makes the right network easy to spot, and a clever one is a small daily pleasure for everyone in the house.
